Allen and am glad to state that it has not proved fatal in but one instance whilst all the restore convalising finely and I hope in a few days they all will be up again. So far the men of my Company have escaped with one excepting and hope with a little care to avoid it throughout

Sir.

You will not leave camps for this place before the 10th of next month as there is beyond any doubt an Epedemic now exerting in this City there are Twenty-five cases now in Wilkes Battery including Lt Allen but as yet it has not proved very fatal among the troops only one having died in Wilkes Battery. We have wonderfully ascaped having had but one case in the Company Corpl Billhartz and he is doing finely and hope with a little precaution we will have no more of it. Lt Yates informed me that he turned over to you 8 horses for the Battery. If so, I wish you will inform me in your next no news only our ladies man remains still in the Hospital expecting to hear from you soon

Galveston Texas Sept 21st 1864

Sir

This is to inform you that Lieut S W Allen Commanding Wilke's light Battery died last night at half past 8 o'clock.

I am sorry to have to inform you that Lt Allen Commanding Wilkes light Battery and one private (Lewis) of the same Company died last night at 8 O'Clock on the 20th inst and were burried to day. There are now about (30) Thirty Cases in the Company and new cases daily breaking out My Company so far has escaped with but one case. I am now the only Officer left but would not advise you to send one to take Lieut Allen's place as it is dangerous at present and I can look after the Company without much trouble until the fever is over

for it takes all the well to nurse the sick and with this I have had to make application for more nurses from other companies to have them properly cared for so under the circumstances you see it is impossible to comply with your request at present but will attend to it so soon as the Epidemic subsides in future your communications must be addressed to me and I will attend to them

This is to inform you of the death of your son Lt Allen Commandg Wilkes Battery he died in this place of yellow fever on the night of the 20th inst. and was burried on the morning of the 21st. he had every care and Attention shown him by relations and friends but all to no effect. In a few days or so soon as I Ran spare time from the sick. I will see to an inventory of his effects and enclose them to you as you may direct They are now about (30) Thirty cases of the fever in his Company two having died besides himself so you can see to what an extent it is prevailing in the City
