subject of that City's Cemetery was read. It requested leave to change the grade of Coolidge Avenue to improve the access to that Cemetery;

Voted. That said application be referred to Mr Bangs, as a committee of one with full powers.

Story Statue.

A letter from W. W. Story Esqr, in relation to the statue of Judge Story, his father, addressed to C.P. Curtis Esqr. was read and referred to Mr Curtis.

Trees in the Cemetery.

The President stated that during a recent tour he had visited most of the celebrated cemeteries in this country, many of which were far superior to Mount Auburn ^ ^{in this respect} viz; that in Mt. Auburn, the original forest has, since the Cemetery was opened, become so dense as to prevent or impede vegetation, injure monuments, prevent many of them from being seen to advantage, and the like. In other cemeteries trees are kept trimmed high, and not allowed to grow so near to each other, and proper vistas are opened.

Committee to trim & remove Trees

Voted. That the President with Messrs Gould and Bangs, be a special committee of three on trimming the trees at the Cemetery, with full powers to act in the premises, and to cause such of the trees to be removed as they shall think fit.

Watering Streets

Mr Ross petition on the subject of watering the street near Mt Auburn was referred to Mr Bangs as a Committee of one with full powers.

Extension of Indian Ridge Path asked for

A petition of sundry proprietors in relation to a proposed way from Willow Avenue to

Indian Ridge Path, (and in favor it,) was referred to Messrs Bangs and Little, with instructions to examine and report what ought to be done on the subject.

H.M. Hayes' Legacy.

A letter from P.V. Watts Ex'or with a copy of a clause from the will of the late Hercules M. Hayes of New York giving one thousand dollars to this Corporation on certain trusts was referred to C.P. Curtis Esquire.

Lot 1714. Representative of.

Voted. That in accordance with the application of Isaac W. How on behalf of the heirs of the late Eliza P. How, deceased, proprietor of lot no. 1714 on Snow drop path. Hall J. How be designated to for the time being to represent - said lot and vote at the meetings of this Corporation, receiving a ticket of admission in that capacity until the further action of this board.

At the regular monthly meeting holden August 7. 1854 there were present Messrs Bangs Bigelow, Crockett Curtis, Kuhn Little and Parker.

The Record of the last meeting was read and approved.

Story Statue.

The following letter form C.P. Curtis Esqr to W.W. Story on the subject of the Story Statue was read and ordered to be recorded [See below _{p. 279.} ]. It was also Voted That the President be requested to correspond with Mr Story on the sub-

ject of a pedestal for the Statue.

Coolidge Avenue. graded.

Mr Bangs from the Committee on the petition of the City of Cambridge as to the grading of "Coolidge Avenue" (so called) reported verbally, that the change requested had been made under his direction, but further changes were desired on the Avenue nearer to the main road, all of which could be made by persons interested without charge to this Corporation. Thereupon Voted. That this Corporation will permit the City of Cambridge to further grade the road between the Cemetery fence and Mr Coolidge's line, ^{the work to be} subject to the approval of Mr Bangs as a Committee.

Watering Streets. allowance for.

Mr Bangs also reported verbally in reference to Mr Ross petition for an allowance for watering the street near the Cemetery, which report was discussed and it was finally Voted.That Mr Bangs be instructed to pay ten dollars on behalf of this Corporation for said purpose for the present year.

Messrs Little & Bangs from a Committee on the subject, reported in writing as follows.

Indian Ridge Path and Willow Avenue.

"The committee appointed to consider and report upon the petition of W.W. Dennis and others that a carriage way be opened across Indian Ridge Path to connect Willow and Lime Avenue, have attended to that duty and report the impracticability of complying with the prayer of the petitioners in consequence of the laying out of the grounds in that vicinity leaving only space for a six foot path. that Osier Path, already graded from Willow to Indian

Ridge be immediately graded to Lime, this partially complying with the prayer of the petitioners and that in laying out lots in future on the East side of Indian Ridge reference should be had to an avenue to be laid out to connect with Willow commencing at some point East of Spurzheim monument."

Which report was accepted.

Insurance.

Mr Little reported verbally, that he had provided for the Continuance of the existing insurance on the house recently purchased of the Stone family; and that no action was necessary as to the occupancy of said house during the present year. On Mr Little's motion it was Voted. That the Treasurer be authorized to sign such deposit note as may be necessary to complete the transfer of such insurance policy.

Avenues in New Purchase

The Committee on the purchase of the Stone farm were authorized to make or cause to be made a plan for laying out the main avenues through said land, Said Committee consists of Messrs Bigelow Little and Bangs.

Purchase of other lands

Messrs Parker Little and Bangs were appointed a Committee on the subject of purchasing lands lying next to the Cemetery on the Westerly side to report at the next meeting.

Statuary for Chapel

The President made a report on the subject of the purchasing Statuary to be placed in the Chapel and it was moved. That the sum of fifteen thousand dollars be appropriated for the purchase of three marble statues to be prepared and executed under contracts to be made
