Original, handwritten diary of Ellen Stabler of Sandy Spring, Md. dated from January 1st to December 17th, 1860. Ellen Stabler (1834-1924) was a life-long resident of Sandy Spring, Md and member of the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting (Quaker). She never married and lived most of her life in the family’s home called Auburn.

21st. A warm, clear day; I walked home from Cherry Grove; Lucy went to Phils last evening to wait on Kate; she sick; the snow going fast: Father gone to Rockville; Joe at Phils after Supper.

22nd. A rainy day; Joe went to Washington; Lucy came home from Phils; Kate better; I had a cold and did not go to meeting.

23d. A clear plesant day; Father went to Laurel and back in the Stage; Lucy went to Uncle Samuels in the afternoon and staid all night at the Cottage.

24th. A clear pleasant day; Nothing occurred of any note. heard of the death of little Warwick Miller; died this morning.

25th. A clear day; not very cold; Father went to Schooleys in the morning; to Higgins in the afternoon, and to Brooke Grove to supper: I spent the day at Cherry Grove. Lucy at the funeral this afternoon: I got a letter from Henrietta, telling that Lucy has the scarlet fever; got a note from Debbie Stabler.

26th. A clear warm day: At meeting; had an excellent sermon from Mary Lippincott; Dr. Howard, Jim Stabler and Brune Bowie here to dinner; Jim, Brune Bowie and Warwick Stabler here to supper; Joe went away with Jim after supper; William with Warwick to John Halls, and Father and mother to Aunt Sallies; Sallie Bond had another daughter yesterday. Eliza & Maggie Brooke here before meeting.

27th. A clear warm day; mother spent the day at Cherry Grove; Father there to supper: Lucy and I spent the evening at Harewood. Joe plowing for corn.

28th. A clear, warm day; Aunt Lizzie called here this morning; Joe plowing. Lucy spent the day at Dr. Palmers: William went for her in the evening; I spent the afternoon at Cherry Grove, with Annie Porter and her mother.

29th. Cloudy nearly all day; Akerman, of Georgia, came on the Briggs business; Father went with him to Brooke Grove in the afternoon; and Father went to Robert R. Moores after supper. Mother at R. T. Bentleys in the afternoon.

3d. mo. 1st. A cloudy morning; cleared off in the evening. Father went to John Stabler's sale, took Lucy to Uncle Toms. Mother and I at Uncle Edwards after supper.

2d. Father at John Stablers again. A beautiful clear day Aunt Lizzie and I went to Hollands and spent the day, Lizzie Holland went with me to see Albert Palmer, he is very low, cannot last many days, it seems hard to think of so estimable a young man being taken off, but no doubt he is prepared for the change; Lizzie H. came to the Cottage when we came home: Joe at Phils after tea.

3d. Clear in the morning; rained in the afternoon; Father

4th. A beautiful clear day; No one here; Lucy and I at Aunt Sally's after supper.

5th. A clear windy day: I spent the day at the Cottage Lucy there in the afternoon; called at Ashton on our way home; then mother and I spent the evening at Harewood. Father went to Rockville to Court this morning.

6th. A clear day; Annie Porter spent the day here; Aunt Jane here in the afternoon; Unlce Charlie here to tea; William Keinnard came for Annie: Father came home from Rockville Albert
