Original, handwritten diary of Ellen Stabler of Sandy Spring, Md. dated from January 1st to December 17th, 1860. Ellen Stabler (1834-1924) was a life-long resident of Sandy Spring, Md and member of the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting (Quaker). She never married and lived most of her life in the family’s home called Auburn.

30th. A beautiful clear day; Lucy went to Aunt Sally Gilpins to tea; I went after tea: we put sisters quilt in from this morning; Father went out to do some surveying for the Insurance company.

31st. Clear until afternoon; begun to rain about 5 oclock in the evening; Father went to Rockville. M.E. Moore and Sarah Thomas spent the day here. Aunt Jane called in the afternoon.

2d. mo. 1st. 1860 Got up and found the ground covered with snow; mercury down to 9 this morning; a fall of nearly forty degrees since sun down yesterday: Went to meeting in the

2d. Very cold mercury 2 below zero this morning; No one here, except Oliver Scott on business; We got the quilt out this evening.

3d Mercury 1 below zero this morning. Joe took Lucy to E. Lea's on his way to Grove Hill, in the afternoon: William at E. Lea's to a surprise party, after supper: Uncle Caleb here in the afternoon.

4th. mercury 16 above zero this morning: Father went down below Colesville to survey some property; at Colesville in the afternoon.

5th. At meeting in the morning; Joe took Kate to see Albert Palmer in the afternoon; William at Harewood in the afternoon: Father at the Cottage after supper. Unlce Tom here to dinner. I got a letter from Debbie.

6th. A cloudy, foggy day: Joe and William at Samuel Elliott's party after supper; Father went to Brookeville in the morning, dined at Grove Hill; Charlie Brooke here to dinner.

7th. Father went to Rockville: I went to Wetheralds in the afternoon to help them sew carpet rags. William went for me, after supper.

8th. monthly meeting; Uncle Tom and Debbie here to dinner; Father went to Baltimore in the afternoon. Joe to Phils after supper.

9th. A clear pleasant day; mother spent the day at Uncle Samuels; Lucy and Lizzie Tyson and Kate here to supper; they and Joe and William went to the Lecture Warwick Stabler came from the lecture and staid all night. Sister's birth-day; 34

to Olivers party: we heard last evening of the death of John Leadbeater; died yesterday morning.

11th. Cold and cloudy. Father came home.

12th. A clear pleasant day; I was at meeting; Charlie Brooke here to dinner; Warwick Stabler here to supper; he and Joe went somewhere together after supper; Warwick Miller called here in the afternoon; I called at Cherry Grove: William at Spring Garden.

13th. Kate and I spent the day at Grove Hill; I called at Joshua Gilpins on my way home; found Aunt Nancy there; we came home together.
