537 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Jul 20 1888 Be it remembered that on the 20th day of July A.D. 1888 the Common Council of the City of Seattle met in its Council Chamber pursuant to law. The following officers were to wit: His Hon. T. T. Minor & Councilmen J. Furth, J. M. Frink, Joseph Green, T. W. Lake Robt Moran, U. R. Niesz & C. F. Reitze. Absent R. Russell, whereupon the following proceedings are had, to wit: Petitions etc Petition of J. D. Smith and others praying the Council to grant the application of H. W. Wheeler and his associates for a street railway franchise on Union Street from Second Street to Ninth Street. Read and referred to Street Committee. Petition of the Pacific Seattle Cable Road and Water Company for an extension of the time to commence work on said road. On motion the petition is granted, provided that the petitioner will file in writing with the City Clerk within ten(10) days its written consent that the City retain the $1000.00 now in its possession as a guaranty for the completion of its road within one year from this day, and that work on said road be commenced within sixty (60) days from this date. Remonstrance of Bailey Gatzert and others against granting A. S. Miller and others permission to grade Marion Street between Fourth Street and Fifth Street, read and referred to Street Committee. Petition of Geo. C. Monroe for permission to transfer his liquor license from the Arcade Saloon on Washington Street to the Mint Saloon on Main Street between Commercial Street and South Second Street. Granted. Petition of A. A. Denny and others for the changing of the grade on Second Street. Referred to Street Committee, and

553 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Aug 3 1888 there being a tie vote the Mayor casts his ballot for Isaac Parker whereupon the said Isaac Parker is duly elected City Treasurer of the City of Seattle. Petitions etc. Petition of Jesse F Cochran & others for opening Light Street from Bluff Street to Bradley Street read and referred to the Street Committee. Petition of J D Lowman and others for a change of grade on [Fifth Street]] corner of Marion Street read and referred to Street committee. Petition of S N Sorensen for a sewer in Spring Street an a sidewalk on said street from Second Street to Third Street read and referred to the Committee on Sewers and Drainage. Petition of Winsor and Co to have Front Street between Pike Street and Union Street read and the Chief of Police directed to notify property owners to clean up their street fronts. Petition of Puget Sound Improvement Company & others to have property owners on line of Pike Street sewer compelled to connect their houses with the sewer in order that the street may be planked as heretofore ordered. Referred to Street Committee. Petition of G Beninghansen for perission to put a small building on west side of Commercial Street next to Harrington & Smith's store referred to Com on Fire & Water. Petition of J H Bridge for opening the alley in Block 31 of Maynard's plat from Mill to Washington Streets referred to Street Committee.

577 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Aug 17 1888 one (331) mills on each and every dollar of the assessed valuation of all the property included within the assessment district created by ordinance No 933 be and the same hereby is levied onsaid property for the purpose of paying for the improvement of Box Street in the City of Seattle from Depot Street to Harrison Street. Ordered that the matter of Fifth Street bulk-head be referred to the Street Committee in conjunction with the City Surveyor and City Attorney with power to act. On motion of Councilman Niesz ordered that if the property owners along the line of streets which have been ordered graded, give satisfactory evidence to the Council that the warrants issued for the improvements of such street or streets will be taken care of by them at or near par, the council will at once advertise for bids for the iprovementof said street or sts. Ordered that Finance Committee in conjunction with the Chief of the Fire Department examine into the matter and report to the council the advisibility of pruchasing three lots for Fire Department. purposes and location & cost of same. Ordered that the sidewalks on both sides of Washington Street from Commercial Street to South Second Street be condemned and the owners of property directed to build now sidewalks and raise same to the grade. Ordered that Main and Washington Streets be replanked from Commercial Street to Railroad.

597 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Sep 7 1888 Harrison Street read and referred to Street Light Committee. Petition of Moses Tubbs for permission to use a portion of Third and Cherry Streets for the placing of building material for a period of four months read and granted. provided that not more than one half of the street be obstructed. Petition of S Sorenson for permission to build a corrugated iron building on the South half (1/2) of Lot 6 Block 6 of D S Maynard's Plat read and referred to the Committee on Fire & Water. Petition of D T Denny and others praying the Council to prohibit the granting of liquor licenses within a radius of four blocks of any school building read and referred to Committee on License & revenue. Petition of Horatio B Rogers and others for street lights on Grant Street read and referred to Comittee on Street Lights in Conjunction with Committee on Health & Police. Petition of Wilson & Nixon for permission to use the sidewalk and a portion of Commercial Street in front of the Arlington Hotel for building material for a period of ninety (90) days read and granted so far as the use of one half of the street is concerned. Communication from D H Webster offering to settle tax in Lot 2 Block 7 Boren & Denny's Addition for the year 1877 read and referred to the City Atty.
