Dear Ma:

I havn’t heard from home for a while but I blame it onto the mail service. We have received quite a lot of mail in the last few days and we expect more to-day. I received six letters from Rose yesterday but I didn’t receive the candy that she sent. I guess I will get about a dozen more in the next mail and maybe the candy. I received those books that Anita sent and they sure will come in handy. I have several French books already but the books she sent have a lot of things in them that my books havn’t. I am learning to speak French slow but sure.

We are having good weather here now plenty of rain and

kinds of games held including a tug-o-war in which some of the engineers competid The King and Queen were there and after the games they gave away medals to the winners. The engineers in the tug-o-war each received a medal which will be a souvenir well worth having.

Thansgiving is getting close now and we have prospects of eating turkey on that day if the Germans don’t sink them. If they ever sunk out turkeys we would all be out after a German and I am afraid France would be minus a few of her prisoners. This might be the last letter you receive before Xmas so

Dear Bro:

Received you letter today and I sure was glad to get it. I also received a big box of candy from Rose. I am going after it like I never tasted candy in my life before. I am eating only soft pieces to-day because the dentist put a filling in one of my teeth to-day and I have to go easy on it. I broke it on a piece of hard tack when we were traveling on the train. We didn’t get any bread when we were traveling we got what the English call schrapnel, and they sure named it right. They get it when they get up in the front but they soak it in water and cook it with some kind of jam and make pudding out of it. We hear some great stories from the men from the front.

Dear Ma:

I have delayed writing for about a week but I have all morning to write so I will drop a line to everybody. I received letter a week ago written Oct 25th and last night I received one you wrote on the 16th of Oct. I guess some of the mail comes over on a slow freight and takes twice as long.

Dear Ma:

Just a line to let you know that I am alright. I received a fruit cake from Allie the other day and it sure was fine. There was two cakes in the box, one of them we ate right away but the other I am saving for thanksgiving. The dinner wouldn’t be complete without a piece of fruit cake. The cake you are sending I am going to save for Xmas dinner. We expect mail about Wednesday and I am in hopes of either getting some candy or a cake. Don’t worry if the mail doesn’t reach you regularly.

Just received word that we can send picture post cards and a lot of the pictures of
