39 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE of H G Strure & others for the grading of 2d Street from Mill Street to Lake Avenue Street with their report that the petition is not signed by 1/2 of the owners of the property fronting on such improvement, thereupon the report is accepted and the petition is referred to the petitioners And now the Ordinance Committee submit Ordinance No 258 the same being entitled "A Special Ordinance for the grading and improvement of Front Street from the South side of Pike Street to the North side of Lake Avenue Street in the City of Seattle in King County Washington Territory" After due consideration said Ordinance is adopted upon the following vote to wit: In favor of adoption Clancy, Collins Densmore, Jennings, Keenan, Keezer & McDonald. Against adoption none Any now Samuel Pettingill makes application & files his bond for a retail liquor license. Whereupon the Council finding he has complied with the requirements of the Ordinance relative thereto it is ordered that a License be issued him for 3 months from March 3, 1882 The following claims having been duly audited by the Council are ordered paid by Warrants drawn on the funds and in the amounts following to wit: City Fund E S Osborne Clerk $41.64 J M Hall Atty 41.67 J H McGraw Chief of Police 50.00 Jas H Worley do 50.00 Jas H Worley Police 40.00 D L McCowan do 80.00 W B Jacklin do 80.00 James Welch do 80.00 S F Coombs J P's fees 11.65 E L Smith Health Officer$75. 41 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE the assessment required by said Ordinance No 257 & filed with the City Clerk on the 20th day of February 1882, and the Council have heard all complaints touching said assessment and haveing made corrections therein & the Council finding such roll as corrected in accordance with law. It is ordered that such roll be & the same is approved & is hereby declared to be the assessment roll for such special districts under said ordinance And now the Oregon & Trans Continental Railroad Company & the Columbia & Puget Sound Railroad Company submit an ordinance for adoption granting said Companies certain rights along the waterfront: Thereupon said Ordinance is referred to the Ordinance Committee with instructions to report thereon at next meeting The matter of certain complaints in reference to lighting the street lamps is hereby referred to the Gas Committee Orderedthat the matter of landing brick upon the City landing places be referred to the Fire Committee Ordered that a Warrant be drawn in favor of Chas McDonald in the sum of $10.00 on the Fire Fund with which to purchase coal. Ordered that the Council Stand adjournment until Tuesday evening March 7th 1882 Attest: E S Osborne Clerk Approved L P Smith Mayor Be it remembered that on this the 7th day of March 1882 the Common Council of the City of Seattle meets in its Council Chamber pusruant to adjournment The following Officers are present towit: His Honor the Mayor L P Smith, and Councilment Thomas Clancy, John Collins, Wm A Jennings, John Keenan, Moses Keezer & Chas McDonald Thereupon the following proceedings are had.

There being a vacancy in the office of Policeman the Council proceed to an election to fill such vacancy Whereupon Wm.B. Thompson securing a majority of all the votes of said Council he is duly declared elected to fill such vacancy A communication is received from the Surveyor relative to the grade of Second Street which is read. Ordered that the bids received in pursuance of the notices published as required by Ordinance Nos 260 & 261 be & They are hereby laid over until streets meeting And now the Cemetery Committee return the following bids to the Council for the slashing of the whole of the new City Cemetery which bids are now opened by the Council & read as follows tourist D.C.Whitney $45.00 Jacob H. Keith 175.00 Patrick Forrest 125.00 James B. Henderson 200.00 A.N. Nims 147.50 Whereupon is appearing to the Council that the bid of D.C. Whitley is the lowest & best bid received it is ordered that the contract be awarded to him accordingly Ordered that the Officers of the Police be & they are hereby required to wear their stars upon the outside of their coat collars Ordered that the Gas Committee be & they are hereby authorized to have the gas light posts painted Ordered that the Council stand now adjourned until Friday evening May 4 1882 Attest: E S Osborne, clerk Approve L.P.
