755 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Mar 5 1886 Petition of Wah Lee for permission to conduct a public laundry, with proper certificates from the Chief of the Fire Dept and from Health Officer attached, is read. moved by Councilman Calligan that the petition be not granted, which motion is adopted by the following vote; in favor thereof Councilmen Calligan, Hall, Lake, McDonald and Young. Against Councilmen Furth, Harrington and Post Petition of Wan Lee for permission to conduct a public laundry, with proper certificates from the Chief of the Fire Dept and from Health Officer attached, is read and on motion laid over until next meeting. Petition of Louis Widen for permission to conduct the Wisconsin Laundry without complying with Ordinance No 710 read and on motion of Councilman Hall is not granted and it is further ordered that the siad Wisconsin Laundry must comply with the ordinance in every respect before permission to conduct said laundry will be granted. Petition of Wm Murphy praying that the council reconsider their action requesting his resignation as Police Officer, is read and on motion ov CouncilmanMcDonald is laid on the table. Petition of W H Pinckney, James Welch amd James Burke praying that they be reinstated on the Police force until charges shall have been preferred against them and that they be permitted to defend themselves against such cahrges read and on motion of councilman Furth is laid on the table. Petition of Z C Miles for permission to repair wooden building is read and on motion refered to the Committee on Fire and Water woth power to act. their actioni requesting his resignation as Police Officer, is read and on motion ov CouncilmanMcDonald is laid on the table.

772 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE Mar 19 1886 The petition of T B Elder et al and D T Denny et al relating to police force are now taken from the table and read. Moved by Councilman Furth that the present force of twenty men including officers be retained, lost by the following vote; In favor of the motion Councilmen Furth, Harrington and Post, opposed Councilman Calligan, Hall, Lake and McDonald Councilman Calligan moved that the Chief of Police and Inspector of Police be directed to reduce the police force by dismissing five men Councilman Hall moved to amend by striking out the word five and inserting the word three, the amendment is carried by the following vote to wit: in favor of the amendment Councilmen Furth, Hall, Harrington and Post; opposed councilmlen Calligan, Lake and McDonald Councilman Calligan motion as amended ia now put and carried On motion the matter of Madison Street extension is made a special order for the next regular meeting Clerk submits anOrdinance entitles "A special ordinance appropriating money to pay audited bills" which is adopted by the following vote to wit: infavor thereof Councilmen Calligan, Furth, Hall, Harrington, Lake, McDonald and Post. 779 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Apr 2 1886 Councilman Lake submits an ordinance entitled "An ordinance to provide for the collection of Road Poll Taxes within the City of Seattle" On motion the ordinance is laid on the table until the next meeting The special order ofthe meeting is now taken up The city attorney reads an ordinance entitled "An ordinance to further extend and established Madison Street in the City of Seattle" On motion the ordinance is referred to the Street Committee and City Attorney to report at the next meeting On motion the permission hereto fore granted to T J Howard to conduct a laundry is revoked Councilman Calligan moves that the Inspector of Police be instructed to dismiss from patrolmen Councilman Post moves to amend by striking out all after the words "instructed" and inserting the words "to retain the police force as it is until next meeting" the amendment is lost by the folowing vote; viz: in favor thereof Councilmen J Furth, G W Hall and J J Post; against councilmen R H Calligan, T W Lake, Chas McDonald and G W Young Councilman Calligan's original motion is now put and carried by the folowing vote to wit: in favor thereof Councilmen R H Calligan, G W Hall, T W Lake, C McDonald and G W Young, against Councilmen J Furth andJ J Post Councilman J Furth calls up the matter of raising

An Ordinance is submitted by the Clerk entitled "A Special Ordinance appropriating money to pay audited bills"; which is adopted by the following vote: In favor of same Calligan, Furth, Hall, Lake, McDonald and Young, Against none. Ordered that the Council do now adjourn H L Yesler mayor Attest W R Forrest clerk Jun 4 1886 Be it remembered that on this 4th day of June 1886 the Common Council of theCity of Seattle meets in its Council Chamber pursuant to law the following officers being present to wit: His Honor the Mayor H L Yesler and Councilmen R H Calligan, J Furth,G W Hall, W A Harrington T W Lake, Chas McDonald, J J Post and G W Young The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved Petition etc received Petition of A L Palmer et al for fire plug cor of 3rd and Leonora Streets read and referred to Com of Fire & Water Petition of G F Gilson praying that a drain ditch be constructed so as to prevent an overflow of water on the East 1/2 of Block 25 Bell & Denny's addition owned by petitioner, read and referrd to committee onSewers and Drainage. Petition of Allmond &Phillips for permission to erect a small wooden building adjoining their Foundry building read and on motion granted.
